Think Change Forum organized this event that focused on India’s prospects of becoming a global leader in gaming innovation. The panel at the event explored India’s gaming industry, projected to surpass $25 billion by 2030, and the challenges it faces in terms of regulation, social perception, and legal hurdles. The panel at the event discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on India’s potential in becoming a gaming hub and utilization of India’s technological expertise in the gaming industry. There was a unanimous opinion at the event that India enjoys natural competitive advantages such as cost efficiency and a large pool of skilled technical professionals, however regulatory issues and societal stigma surrounding gaming continue to pose significant challenges. The webinar had a dynamic panel comprising of legal, technological, and psychological experts sharing their views on the Indian Gaming Industry. A well-known legal expert on the panel, Arjun Sinha believed that blanket bans on the gaming sector will not work and could drive gaming activities underground. Another eminent panelist at the event Faisal Kawoosa, a tech industry leader, highlighted India’s growing gaming industry, which stands to benefit from innovations like 5G and AI, but he warned against the AI driven manipulation. While Dr. Jayanti Dutta, a psychologist, looked at the psychological aspects of gaming, according to her gaming had both benefits and potential harm. She believes gaming can stimulate cognitive development; but it also carries the risk of addiction. She also said a combination of regulation, education and counselling were effective ways to deal with gamming addiction.
One of the other eminent panelists Dr. R.K. Suri was of the opinion at the webinar that prohibition rarely works, he cited examples from other sectors and recommended a balanced approach that encourages innovation while mitigating the risks associated with excessive gaming. The event concluded with a consensus reached by the panelists about India’s great gaming potential, but they also suggested a thoughtful and progressive regulatory framework for the functioning of the gaming industry.
